Tis the season for claiming your homestead exemption if you've purchased a home this year. Every year, someone buys a home, moves in, and then forgets to claim homestead. You will need to do this before the end of September. I've shown up to the closing table and watched a seller realize they never claimed homestead. And, they owned the home for 7 or 8 years. This cost them over $10,000. If you fail to claim homestead, your property tax liability will approximately double.
If you've purchased a home this year (hopefully with us), here's what you need to do:
1. Need a copy of the Deed.
2. Have a driver's license that matches your property address. You can do this at the same time at the Madison County Service Center
3. Bring a utility set date letter from Huntsville Utilities
